R&D

Too often R&D activities fail to align with customer needs or market realities and hence struggle to result in the technology being used in a live project. To ensure the highest likelihood of success the following considerations must be made:

Does the technology meet a customer need?
Is there a target program that this technology could be inserted?
How likely is target program insertion?

These questions do not assess the technical qualities of the R&D potential product but its value to the customer and your ability to realise that value given your businesses position in that market and programs available.

R&D is often a key ingredient in Business Development activities with the following benefits:

Provides a positive reason to talk to the customer about your innovation activities and gain feedback
Improves the level of customer buy-in
On completion provides a further engagement opportunities by providing customer demonstrations
If the R&D demonstrations are constructed well they also enable existing products to be featured
Reduces programmatic risk should the technology be realised

A sample of Basys Consultings R&D projects are detailed below.

WHAMMS: Watercraft and Helicopter Mission Management System

To take an off-the-shelf helicopter mission planning system and develop it to support multiple air and surface missions for real-time operations. A prototype had to be built and demonstrated in Europe within 3 months.

SSI: Sonar Suite Interface

Rapidly develop an Open Architecture interface between the sonar system and Tacticos combat system using the Open Splice publish/subscribe middleware ustilising the open data model provided to DSTO.

ATiC: Australian Transformation and Innovation Centre

Integration of a European developed open architecture Combat Management System (CMS) into Thales’ ATiC simulation laboratory. When completed, provide a series of demonstrations for a range of Australia
